An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between browser and server. Without a certificate the browser shows “Not secure”, and forms and logins travel through the network unprotected.
Technically the protocol is called TLS today; the name SSL has stuck. The certificate confirms that the connection really leads to your domain – and, depending on the validation, which company stands behind it.
A free certificate is already included with our web hosting. You need a paid one mainly on your own servers, for wildcards and when your company name should appear in the certificate.
DV, OV, EV and wildcard
DV – domain validated
Only your control of the domain is checked. Issued quickly and inexpensive – the encryption is just as strong as with the pricier certificates.
OV – company validated
Your company is checked as well. Its name appears in the certificate, and visitors find it in the certificate details.
EV – extended validation
The strictest check: company, address and contact person. For sites where trust matters most, such as shops and portals.
Wildcard – all subdomains
One certificate for *.example.com covers shop., mail., app. and every other subdomain on that level. Available as DV or OV.

Setup
How the certificate gets onto your server
On a VPS or dedicated server you install the certificate yourself: you have root access and add the files to your web server, for example nginx or Apache.
If you like, we create the key and the certificate request for you in the customer area. That is also where you download all files once the certificate is issued.

Choose a certificate and pay. You pay once a year.
Create the request
Enter the domain in the customer area. We create the key and the certificate signing request (CSR) for you – or you paste your own CSR.
Confirm the domain
Via DNS record, a file on the web server or an email to an address of the domain. For OV and EV your company is checked as well.
Install
Download the certificate, the intermediate certificate and the key and add them to your web server. Your connection is now encrypted.

Frequently asked questions
I have web hosting with you – do I need this?
Usually not. Every web hosting package already includes a free certificate that renews by itself. You need a paid certificate if your company name should appear in it (OV or EV), if a customer or a tender requires a paid certificate, or if you want to use a wildcard on your own servers.
How is it different from a free certificate?
The encryption is just as strong. A free certificate only checks the domain and has to be renewed automatically about every 90 days. A paid one is valid longer, can confirm your company, and we help you with the issuance.
How long is a certificate valid?
You pay for 12 months. Under the browsers’ rules a certificate may be valid for at most 200 days since March 2026. Before it expires you reissue it in the customer area – at no extra cost within the term.
What do I need for OV and EV?
Your company must be listed in a public register, such as the commercial register, and be reachable at the address and phone number you provide. The validation authority contacts you, usually by email and phone. Without a register entry it may ask for further documents. Private individuals can get DV.
What does a wildcard cover?
A wildcard for *.example.com covers example.com and every subdomain directly below it, such as shop.example.com or mail.example.com – but not a further level like test.shop.example.com.
How do I install the certificate on my VPS or dedicated server?
Once it is issued, download the certificate, the intermediate certificate and the key in the customer area and add them to your web server, for example nginx or Apache. If you get stuck, open a ticket.
Can I put several domains into one certificate?
No, each certificate covers one domain with www, or as a wildcard its subdomains. For several different domains you order one certificate per domain.
How do I cancel?
In the customer area under your contract. The term is 12 months, the notice period one month to the end of the term.
